Random Thoughts - Redesigns, WoW & Linux!
Hello and er, happy new year! It seems like only yesterday I was updating the date in the footer of this site to 2025, I promise I will post more this year… maybe! I am sick again as I write this, same thing - infected throat, I am on antibiotics (Phenoxymethylpenicillin), it’s in my nose and ears too, I can’t record videos like this, so instead I am working on CEDUK, playing WoW Midnight and messing about in Linux.
So yes, first thing to discuss is this website. In short it’s shit, the layout, the CSS, the typography, the images, the vertical rhythm, it’s all rubbish written back as early as 2014. I even used SASS to write some of the CSS, is SASS still a thing any more? I don’t know, but it was a big deal back when I was writing this site.
So, a re-design is in order, I am going to make it really nice and simple, I am going to work on making the typography look nice with vertical rhythm and all that, I think I am going to get rid of the big hero images in articles, they don’t add anything, I just liked to use them back then. I am going to write really nice CSS and I will most likely need to redo all my articles to use proper markdown. As always, my site is all static content powered by Jekyll.
I am going to get rid of the cookie banner, it’s not needed, it’s useless, pointless and just takes up resources and I think I’m going to get rid of the Google Analytics code, I don’t look at my anayltics and it’s just more JS bloat.
So, I think what I’ll do is make a new directory for CEDUK V2 and start from scratch, I think this time round I’m going to learn Git and use it in my workflow, I’ve been basically writing the website, rendering it and then uploading it via WebDAV using WinSCP, apparently this is a very newb thing to do, I want to get better at all this computing bollocks, I want to learn Git, relearn Linux, code more and start using AI.
The source code for the new website will be on my GitHub profile. Oh yes and I need to mess about updating the Font Awesome icons.
I registered a new domain - chriselisonelectronics.com! This will eventually be the website for all my electronics experiments and YouTube videos, again, I’m going to slowly develop it, publish it on GitHub and it will be all static HTML rendered in Jekyll.
I had a bit of trouble in one of my recent WoW paladin episodes, at the end of episode 173 I had to kill a boss called Zuluhed in Shadowmoon Valley, it was a 5-man quest but I have had no problem soloing group quests before the stat squish/Midnight prepatch, but this time I got owned. I was ready to end the series, I was so frustrated with the TBC quests, plus I am not a fan of TBC in general. But I had a genius thought, I could just opt out of Chromie Time and then I easily one-shotted Zuluhed. I think I am going to stay in the current timeline now, it’s so much easier and faster, I feel a duty to complete what I started, so I’m not going to give up that easily, I’m going to carry on for now, but I do really want to do other stuff like working on my electronics channel and playing Minecraft.
Oh yes, and starting from episode 178, my WoW paladin episodes will be going out fortnightly, this is because I have been so ill recently and also not had time to do anything else, I literally have like an hour a week to record videos, it fucking sucks.
I have started levelling in Midnight on my mage, Hellwrathar. Silvermoon City and Eversong Woods are so beautiful, it’s such an improvement on Khaz Algar/Dornogal. I have many happy memories levelling a Blood Elf paladin, hunter and mage there, it’s quite nice we’re friendly with the Blood Elves. I think I will level my mage, paladin and rogue first.

I am hoping to start my new Minecraft series this year, it will be FTB Infinity Evolved Series 2, but this time it will be chilled out, long and not rushed. I will be doing everything - every quests in the questbook, every mod and killing every boss. I will be running shaders, but we’ll see how it goes performance-wise, I may need to turn them off later on.

I recently downloaded VirtualBox and installed Ubuntu Linux on it. I have been slowly re-learning the commands and I’ve been installing new apps like Alacritty, Hexchat, Phoenix, Cliamp, Obsidian and tmux. I’ve been doing a little bit of coding, some of it is coming back to me, I really want to learn as many languages as I can, I’ll put the source code on GitHub. Tmux is amazing, I feel like such a hacker with multiple panes open in the terminal!

Ultimately, I want a lab of machines running different operating systems, I want an AI server with a good GPU and tons of RAM, I want a laptop maybe running Omarchy (a beautiful looking distro made by the controversial gigachad, DHH). I don’t think I will be gaming on Linux, I will leave that to Windows. But yeah, so far my reintroduction to Linux has been fantastic, no crashes, everything I’ve installed just works. I first started using Linux back in 1998/99, I wanted to be a hacker, although in reality I only knew basic Linux commands and not much coding. I think I will write an article about computing and hacking… Anyway, I used Linux in university, think they had Ubuntu installed, after that I started getting into BF2 and then World of Warcraft and didn’t touch Linux until just a couple of weeks ago.
Oh yes, that reminds me, I want to make a new YouTube channel! I currently have three (Chris Elison, Chris Elison Electronics, Chris Elison Live), but I want to make a channel for stuff that isn’t necessarily gaming or electronics related, so stuff like vlogs, photography, videography, coding, web dev, unboxings that sort of stuff. I was thinking of making the videos very unedited and raw, or maybe really put some work in like Nelferch’s videos, I don’t know. I will let you know if I make the new channel, I am still wondering what to call it, maybe ‘ChrisElisonDotUK’.
And finally, some more sad news, another Elder Scrolls YouTuber has died, this time Camelworks, I loved this guy’s Fallout and ES videos, he mentioned he had a heart attack not too long ago I was devastated to hear he died, the poor guy lost his YouTube channel recently, too. Rest in peace, dude.
